*Ibn Abbas narrates:**
One day, during his caliphate, Umar came to the mosque for the morning prayer and saw a person sleeping in the prayer niche (mihrab). Umar said to his servant, "Wake him up for prayer." The servant went forward and noticed that the person was wearing women's clothing, so he assumed it was a woman from the Ansar. He tried to move the person, but there was no response. It turned out to be a beheaded man dressed in women's clothes.
Umar ordered the body to be placed in a corner of the mosque and proceeded to lead the morning prayer. After the prayer, he asked Imam Ali (peace be upon him), "What is your opinion on this matter?"
The Imam (peace be upon him) said:
"Have the slain man buried and wait until you see a child in this same prayer niche."
Umar asked, *"How do you know this?"*
Ali (peace be upon him) replied, *"My brother and beloved, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), informed me of this matter."*
When nine months had passed, Umar entered the mosque for the morning prayer and suddenly heard the cry of an infant. He exclaimed, *"God, His Messenger, and the cousin of the Messenger have spoken the truth!"* Then he ordered his servant, *"Take the newborn from the prayer niche."*
After the prayer, the child was brought and placed before Imam Ali (peace be upon him). The Commander of the Faithful said, *"Find a wet nurse from the Ansar to care for the child."*
The child was born in the month of Muharram. Imam Ali then instructed Umar’s servant, *"Bring the wet nurse and the child back after nine months, on the day of Eid al-Fitr."*
When the appointed time came, the wet nurse brought the child to Imam Ali (peace be upon him). He said to her, *"Take the child to the Eid prayer grounds. Observe carefully: whichever woman takes the child from you, kisses its face, and says, ‘O oppressed one, son of an oppressed mother! O son of a tyrant!’—seize her and bring her to me."*
The wet nurse took the child to the prayer grounds when suddenly a woman called out from behind her, saying:
*"I beg you, by the right of Muhammad ibn Abdullah (peace be upon him), wait a moment!"*
The wet nurse stopped, and the woman approached, took the child, kissed its face, and said:
*"O oppressed one, son of an oppressed mother! O son of a tyrant! How much you resemble my murdered child!"*
The woman was exceptionally beautiful. When she handed the child back and turned to leave, the wet nurse grabbed her sleeve.
The woman pleaded, *"Let me go!"*
But the wet nurse refused, saying, *"I won’t release you until I take you to Ali ibn Abi Talib!"*
The woman grew distressed and warned, *"Ali will expose me before the people! If you do this, I will hold you accountable on Judgment Day!"*
Ignoring her, the wet nurse tried to drag her away. Desperate, the woman offered:
*"Let me go, and I will take you to my house. I’ll give you two Yemeni slaves, a fine San’a’i garment, and 300 silver dirhams."*
The wet nurse agreed and went with her to collect the payment. The woman then added:
*"If you bring the child back to me on Eid al-Adha, I’ll reward you the same way again."*
By then, the people had finished their Eid prayers and were returning home.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) summoned the wet nurse and said:
*"O enemy of God! What did you do with my instruction?"*
The wet nurse replied, *"I saw no one."*
The Imam (peace be upon him) said, *"By the right of the one buried in this grave (pointing to the Prophet’s tomb), you are lying! That woman came, took the child, kissed its face, bribed you, and said, ‘If you bring him back on Eid al-Adha, I will reward you again.’"*
The wet nurse trembled and cried, *"O cousin of the Messenger of God! Do you know the unseen?!"*
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) replied, *"None knows the unseen except God. But the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) informed me of this matter."*
The wet nurse admitted, *"The truest speech is the honest one. It happened just as you said. Now, if you command me, I will bring the woman to you."*
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said, *"After she took you to her house, she moved to another. Now you must wait until Eid al-Adha to bring her, so God may forgive your negligence."*
The wet nurse said, *"I obey."*

### On Eid al-Adha:
When the day came, the wet nurse returned to the spot. The woman appeared, took the child, kissed its face, and said, *"Come with me so I may give you what I promised."*
The wet nurse refused, *"I will never let you go!"*
The woman raised her head to the sky and prayed:
*"O Helper of the helpless! O Refuge of the distressed!"*
Then she went with the wet nurse to the mosque. When they stood before Imam Ali (peace be upon him), he asked her, *"Shall you speak, or shall I?"*
The woman replied, *"I will speak."*
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said, *"Then speak."*

### The Woman’s Story:
*"I am the daughter of a man from the Ansar. My father, ‘Amir ibn Sa’d al-Khazraji, was martyred fighting alongside the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family). My mother died during Abu Bakr’s caliphate, leaving me alone. I found solace among neighbor women.*
*One day, as I sat with women from the Muhajireen and Ansar, an elderly woman with a rosary and a cane approached. She asked each of us our names. When she came to me, she asked, ‘What is your name?’..."*
The woman continued her story:
*"I said, ‘My name is Jameelah.’*
*She asked, ‘Whose daughter are you?’*
*I replied, ‘The daughter of Amir the Ansari.’*
*‘Do you have a father?’*
*‘No.’*
*‘Are you married?’*
*‘No.’*
*Then she pitied me, wept, and said, ‘Would you like a woman to come to you, to help and keep you company?’*
*I said, ‘Yes, I would.’*
*The old woman said, ‘I am ready to be a kind mother to you.’*
*Overjoyed, I replied, ‘Please, this house is yours, and I am at your service.’*
*She asked for water, performed ablution, and when I offered her bread, milk, and dates, she wept. I asked, ‘Why do you cry?’*
*She said, ‘My child, my usual meal is a piece of barley bread or a little salt.’*
*She cried again and added, ‘But now is not even the time for me to eat—I break my fast only after the Isha prayer.’*
*She stood to pray until Isha was over. I brought her a piece of barley bread and some salt. Then she asked me to bring ashes. When I did, she mixed them with the salt and ate three bites of bread with it before resuming prayer. She prayed until dawn.*
*Witnessing her devotion, I kissed her head and pleaded, ‘Pray for me! May God forgive me, for your prayers are answered.’*
*Then she said, ‘You are a beautiful girl, and I fear for you when I leave you alone. You should have a woman with you. I have a pious and wise daughter, older than you. If you wish, I can bring her to be your companion.’*
*I said, ‘Of course I wish it!’*
*She left but returned later—alone."*
I asked, *"Why didn't you bring your daughter with you?"*
She replied, *"My daughter doesn't socialize easily. The women of Muhajireen and Ansar visit your house often, which would disturb her worship."*
I said, *"While your daughter stays with me, I won't let anyone enter."*
The old woman left and returned later with a woman completely wrapped in clothes, only her eyes visible.
When she stopped at the door, I asked, *"Why don't you come in?"*
The old woman said, *"She's so happy to see you that she's overwhelmed."*
I went to lock the door to prevent visitors. When I tried to uncover the "girl's" face, I found a black-bearded young man with hennaed hands, dressed as a woman!
I cried in fear, *"How could you commit this crime?! Leave now! Aren't you afraid of Umar's punishment?"*
As I tried to escape, he overpowered me like an eagle seizing a sparrow, assaulted me, then fainted in drunkenness.
I beheaded him with his own knife and prayed:
*"O God! You know he wronged me. I trust in You - the Best Protector, the Best Concealer of faults!"*
At night, I dumped his body in the mosque's mihrab. Later, I gave birth to his child but couldn't kill it, so I swaddled and left it in the mosque.
Umar's Judgment:
Umar testified: *"I heard the Prophet (PBUH) say: 'I am the City of Knowledge, and Ali is its Gate.' Ali speaks truth."*
He then asked Ali (AS): *"What is your ruling?"*
Imam Ali (AS) declared:
1. *No blood money for the killed man - he committed a major sin.*
2. *No punishment for the woman - she was forced.*
3. *"Bring the old woman to face God's justice."*
The Old Woman's Fate:
When captured and brought before Ali (AS), she denied everything until ordered to swear by the Prophet's (PBUH) grave. As she swore falsely:
- Her face turned black in the mirror
- The darkness remained despite Ali's prayer for its removal
Ali (AS) concluded: *"Your repentance isn't accepted - God hasn't forgiven you!"
Then, Umar ordered the old woman to be exiled from Medina and stoned to death.
*Ibn Abi'l-Hadid briefly mentions this incident, stating: "This event occurred during Umar's caliphate."*
