The Tragic Story of Captivity: The Bravery of Zainab and Sajjad (AS)
On that bloody day, as the sun of Ashura began to set, the earth of Karbala trembled. Imam Hussain (AS) took his last breath, and his final cry, *"Is there anyone to help me?"* echoed through history. But this was not the end—it was the beginning of a painful journey for the survivors.
### The Looting of the Tents and the Helpless Captives
After killing Imam Hussain (AS), the soldiers of Umar ibn Sa’d attacked the tents of the women and children. They looted everything—even the scarves of the young girls and the clothes of the children. The cries of the helpless orphans filled the air. Lady Zainab (AS), witnessing this horror, rushed to her martyred brother’s side and, with tearful eyes, prayed: *"O Allah, accept this small sacrifice from us!"*
Then, Yazid’s army took the survivors as prisoners. The women and children were tied up and forced onto bare camels. Imam Zain al-Abidin (AS), who was severely ill, was shackled with heavy chains. The caravan of captives, filled with the cries of children and the mourning of Zainab (AS), moved toward Kufa.
### Entering Kufa: Zainab’s Fiery Speech
When the prisoners entered Kufa, the people stayed silent out of fear of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad. But Lady Zainab (AS) stood tall and delivered a historic speech:
*"O people of Kufa! O betrayers! Is this not Hussain, whom you killed and whose family you took captive? Woe to you! When his messengers came to you, you promised to help him—but then you drew your swords and attacked the grandson of the Prophet (PBUH)!"*
Her powerful words shook the crowd. Many bowed their heads in shame and wept. Even the enemies were moved by her courage.
### In Damascus: Facing Yazid
The prisoners were then taken to Yazid in Damascus. Sitting arrogantly on his throne, Yazid struck the blessed teeth of Imam Hussain (AS) with a stick and mocked him in verse. But suddenly, Imam Sajjad (AS), despite his weakness, stood and declared:
*"O Yazid! Do you think killing Hussain (AS) has made you victorious? Know that his blood is a light that will never fade, and his name will live on until Judgment Day!"*
Then, Zainab (AS) shouted with a powerful voice: *"O Yazid! Do whatever you want, but remember—you can never extinguish the light of Allah!"*
Their words were so impactful that even Yazid’s own courtiers began to weep. Furious, Yazid ordered them to be thrown into dark prisons.
### The End of Captivity: An Eternal Message
After months of suffering, the prisoners of Karbala were finally freed. But the mission of Zainab (AS) and Imam Sajjad (AS) had just begun. They traveled from city to city, proclaiming: *"They killed Hussain so that Islam may live!"*
Their story of grief and resistance ignited a fire in people’s hearts, sparking revolts against Yazid’s rule. Through their suffering, Zainab (AS) and Imam Sajjad (AS) became beacons of truth, proving that justice will always prevail, even if the whole world stands against it.
